How to reset the Outlook Address Book service in Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003

There are times when you need to reset the information store but before resetting information store it is important to know that the link between Address book service and Contacts folder will get broken.

Address book service when enabled helps the user to add personal Contacts folders to Global Address List to check names and auto-complete information.

When information store is retuned, users find that their automatic name checking is no more in action and auto complete feature is also unable to find names from contacts from the Global Address List. To deal with this issue, user needs to reset the address book service. This article will describe the process of resetting Address Book service in Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Resetting Address Book service in Outlook 2003 and 2002

  • Start Outlook.

  • On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.

  • In the Directory area, click View or change existing directories or address books, and then click Next.

  • In the Directories and Address Books box, click Outlook Address Book, and then click Remove.

  • When you are prompted to remove the Outlook Address Book, click Yes and then click Finish.

  • On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.

  • In the Directory area, click Add a new directory or address book, and then click Next.

  • Click Additional Address Books, and then click Next.

  • Click Outlook Address Book, and then click Next.

  • When you are prompted to restart Outlook, click OK.

  • Quit Outlook, and then start Outlook again.

  • If you had previously set Outlook to search the Contacts folder before the Global Address List, click Address Book on the Tools menu. In the Address Book, click Options on the Tools menu. Then, verify that the search order on the Addressing tab is correct.

Resetting Address Book service in Outlook 2000

  • Start Outlook, and then click Services on the Tools menu.

  • Click the Outlook Address Book service, and then click Remove.

  • Click Add, click Outlook Address Book under Available information services, and then click OK to add the Outlook Address Book service again. If you will examine the service properties, you will find that no Contacts folders are associated with the service.

  • Quit and log off from Outlook, and then start Outlook again.

  • Make sure that all of the required Contacts folders are listed. If any expected folder is not listed, open the properties of that folder, click the Outlook Address Book tab, and then click the Show this folder as an e-mail address book check box. Quit Outlook, and then start Outlook again.

  • If you previously set Contacts folders to be searched before the Global Address List is searched, click Services on the Tools menu, and then verify that the search order on the Addresses tab is correct.

Using above mentioned procedure, you can reset Address Book service in Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003. This way you will not find any issue regarding automatic name checking and auto complete features after information store reset. Steps involved are simple too.
